ABOUT US

About pfeg

pfeg (Personal Finance Education Group) is an independent charity with the mission of ensuring that all young people leaving school are equipped with the confidence, skills and knowledge they need in financial matters to take part fully in society.

pfeg is the UK's leading finance education organisation helping schools to plan and teach financial capability. pfeg gives teachers, school leadership teams and local authorities free support, resources and guidance to develop financial capability education that fits their needs.

pfeg runs a number of projects across the UK and has a team of regional consultants across England offering support and advice to schools and local authorities to increase the quality and quantity of personal finance education.

In April 2006 pfeg began Learning Money Matters, a 5 year project supported by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) which aims to provide direct in-school support from pfeg consultants to 4000 secondary schools across England.

To support this work in secondary schools pfeg launched Use Your Expertise, developed with funding from the Institute for Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and GE Money and supported by Rathbone Brothers PLC, The Personal Finance Society, Co-operative Financial Services, The Association of Accounting Technicians and The Coventry Building Society. This scheme brings the expertise of people in the financial services into the classroom by providing a dedicated website teachers can use to find volunteers whose location, experience and skills match their needs.

In 2008 pfeg was commissioned by the Department for Children, Schools and Families to run My Money, its 3 year project supporting local authorities in bringing finance education to life in every school under their care. My Money gives schools access to the best teaching resources and information available across primary and secondary education to make sure our children and young people learn everything they need to know to manage money well. Most recently, the first ever My Money Week took place across England, bringing schools and their local communities together to learn more about managing money in a practical and relevant way.

pfeg believes it is never too early to start. In January 2007, pfeg, supported by HSBC Bank plc, began What Money Means  - a £3.4 million, five year project which aims to create a step change in how children learn about money in primary schools.

A message from AEGON

At AEGON we believe that good money sense is as much a vital part of modern life as looking after our health and looking after our planet.  People who are good with money are more likely to have secure, independent, and less stressful lives.  Many people are enjoying longer lives, thanks to advances in healthcare, science and medicine.  Good money sense helps people to also enjoy better lives.

But people aren't born with good money sense.  Like good health habits, and like doing our bit for the environment, being good with money is built up of things we are taught when we are young, and how we use that know-how to make good decisions for ourselves when we're older.

When we first saw the idea for the Financial Lifestyle Planning project we were very keen to help bring it to life.  We loved the concept of using modern technology to communicate to children and young people the benefits and importance of planning their finances alongside planning their aspirations and thinking about how their lives might unfold. Of course, you need to do this in ways that work for the young people themselves and for their teachers.  That's why the research stages of this project were so important, capturing these groups' views of what's good and what's not in the way of learning resources.

At AEGON we pride ourselves in our commitment to building a more financially capable population in the UK.

  • Our Chief Executive, Otto Thoresen, was asked by the Government to design a blue print for a free national financial advice service to give people a helping hand with budgeting, saving, borrowing, pensions, and with busting financial jargon. Otto's vision is being piloted this year by the Government and the Financial Services Authority.
  • We have sponsored a project to promote placing fully qualified professional financial advisers in Citizens Advice Bureaux to share their expertise with people on a pro bono basis.
  • We have supported pfeg's vital work in schools for a number of years
